Vehicle: 2013 RAM C/V with 219k

Situation: while in motion the van starts to overheat. When you come to a stop and sit idling for a minute or two, the temperature gauge quickly returns to normal.

It just had come back from the shop after the transmission was replaced. We originally replaced the transmission back in April and the replacement transmission failed; the new one was replaced under warranty. Other than that, the van is behaving normally. No loss of power or anything. So, what could be causing this?

Usually overheating issues are the exact opposite. Overheat while idling, fine while in motion. That is weird.

Check out the radiator cap. It sounds like the cooling system isn’t holding pressure.

Yeah, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen this happen.

3.6L, right?

They have thermostat issues, amongst others. Sounds like it might not ACTUALLY be overheating though. Might be a false reading. Grab some heater hoses and see if they’re all getting hot.

Come to think of it, we just put a 3.6L in a Grand Caravan for overheating issues. I should ask if it did it when stationary or moving.

I will have them do that, thanks. They’re checking it out now, and it’s a mechanic I trust.

Solution: dump it for a transit connect.

Interesting. I have 3 in my fleet, and the 2 we’ve had longest have never had any cooling problems. Both are over 210k. I also just bought a used 2012 that has just under 100k that was in great shape. And yes, all are the 3.6. I love these vans, I’m sad they don’t make them anymore.

Oh good lord no. We had the worst experience with those. They constantly broke down. Out of 7, only one even came close to 200k.

Really? I’ve heard nothing but good things about them. They’re the darling of all the local businesses around here.

I had a Mustang with similar symptoms. Chased it forever. Pulled out my hair. Sold it out of spite... found out when I saw it again a couple years later that the issue was the radiator cap... fml.

Fan installed backwards somehow?

Just asked, it was overheating all the time. Told him your problem and he goes “Uhhhhh headgaskets?”

They’re not too common, but with 200k+ anything is possible. Combustion leaking into the coolant passages could be heating up coolant under load or creating air pockets, causing a hot reading, and the lack of a load at a stop would cool it down as pressure decreases.

They were awful. Transmissions were crap, slow as hell, interior trim constantly broke, overheating issues, etc. They were hateful bastards. That’s the previous generation, BTW. One of our other cities bought a new one and they’re the guinea pig.
